The Basic Gear
The top priority of the Backpackers Hill Walking Club is Safety. Good weather
is an exception on the mountains, so it is essential to be prepared at all times.
Do NOT endanger yourself or the group by being unprepared.
Use the following as a checklist before venturing out on the hills:
- Stout Waterproof Walking boots
- Waterproof Coat
- Waterproof Over-Trousers
- Warm Hat and Gloves
- Small Rucksack for lunch and extra clothing
- Drinking Water
- Food and Drink for lunch
- Extra Clothing Layers (in case it is cold on mountain)
- Woolly Socks
- Change of Clothes (to be left in car)
- Small Torch (for emergencies)
- Bivvy Bag (survival bag)
The following are also recommended:
- Map, Compass, Whistle, Waterproof Map Case
- Mobile Phone in waterproof bag (for emergency use)
- A Friendly Smile and Positive Attitude…
When walking with a group:
- Have the gear as listed above
- Abide by the Walk Leader's decisions
- Always stay with the group
- If your health is in doubt - don't go out
